The funeral of Prof Stephen Hawking is taking place at University Church of St Mary the Great in Cambridge. For those who have been there, the feeling is we would love to be there now. It is the most charming of all British cities form the small to medium size. Six porters from the Stephen Hawking’s college Gonville and Caius, carried his coffin. Guests included the model Lily Cole, Queen guitarist and astrophysicist Brian May and comedian Dara Ó Briain. The actor Eddie Redmayne, who played the role of Professor Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything will deliver lines from Ecclesiastes 3.1-11 at the service.
“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven. A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up. A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing.”
It will be followed by a reading by the astronomer royal, Martin Rees. Eulogies will be delivered by Robert Hawking, and Prof Fay Dowker, the son and a protegée of Stephen Hawking. The service will be officiated by the Rev Dr Cally Hammond, dean of Gonville and Caius College. The flags of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, Trinity Hall, Cambridge and University College, Oxford are flying at half-mast in honour of Stephen Hawking.
His ashes will be enterred next to those of Sir Isaac Newton at Westminster Abbey on 15th June.
